D.O SOMONTANO

The SOMONTANO D.O, “Denominación de Origen” (De-nomination of Origin), was created in 1984. That's a young appellation of origin, dynamic, which has acquired over the years a reputation for the exceptional quality of its wines, particular flavors of ripe berry fruit with soft tannins, intense ruby color, and a finish that has no end. In short, these wines have a lot of body. It is often said that a wine that is not at least 13,5%  is not a SOMONTANO wine...

The SOMONTANO vineyard is located in Aragon, northeast Spain. Aragon is bounded to the northwest by the Navarra province (Navarre), to the east by Cataluña (Catalonia), and to the north by the Pyrenees witch divides France from Spain. The vineyard is located in the province of Huesca, and Barbastro is the main city around which the vines are grown; mainly in the Comarca (Canton) Somontano. The vineyards lie on the foothills of the Pyrenees and that geographical location determines the climate of the region. Given the proximity of the mountain, the contrasts are quite marked between cold, damp winters and very hot dry summers. The contrast is marked both from north to south and from east to west.

A tradition of wines and grapes of its own characterize the SOMONTANO region. The white grape varieties found in the vineyards are Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca and Alcañón, but also Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.  The traditional red varieties are Tempranillo, Moristel and Parraleta, the aboriginal varieties’, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, were imported from France (Barbastro is just a 90 km drive from the French border).

The development strategy of the Somontano vineyard is to maintain the tradition of local wines by improving quality through the provision of imported varieties. Research in this direction is bearing fruit and the development of export markets is changing rapidly. White wines are made from Macabeo and bear the mark of this variety. These wines are young, fresh and fruity. Macabeo and Chardonnay combined together can produce wines with more body and flavor.
The red wines (Tinto) are full body wines, many of which are known for heir fruity bouquet. Productions from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tempranillo are remarkable both for the quality of the young wines as well as  for those ones aged in barrels.
